Young Entrepreneurs Take the Stage
Whom is going to turn this economy around you ask? "Entrepreneurs" is the answer most frequently heard, but who is this group and what will cause them to rise to the occasion?
Today's definition of an entrepreneur covers a broad spectrum of age, background and the type of company they will start. At the height of the recession, we heard the term, "necessity entrepreneur". This referred to older men and women who were caught up in the corporate layoffs and out of "necessity" chose to start a company to supplement their income. A large percentage entered the world of consulting to share their hard-earned knowledge for a fee.
Now we are seeing a new type of entrepreneur, at the opposite end of the age and experience curve. Anika Anand a contributor for MSMBC writes, "They've proven they have the gumption to start their own businesses. Now they say they're ready to save the economy.www.msnbc.msn.com What these young business owners may lack in experience they often make up in energy and drive.
I recall my humble beginning when I started my first company at age 27; it was my pure drive, ambition and need to succeed that allowed me to overcome my lack of knowledge and experience. As an adjunct professor at USC Marshall Lloyd Greif Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, I see the same drive in the students that I teach.
What I find interesting about all this is the possible connection between the two groups. If the fresh ideas and the excess energy of youth could be combined with the experience and knowledge of the older generation, an unstoppable team could be created. Before long, our economy would be running again with a renewed vibrancy. Wouldn't it be wonderful to once again see an America where generations work together for a better tomorrow!
