Jim Collin's Good to Great-- Management
In the end it comes down to people --- management determines how well those people perform. I have written endless articles, blogs and delivered numerous speeches on the topic of management. After consulting with companies for over twenty years I am convinced that management is the single factor that can make or break a company.
I talk about this in my latest summary, 60 Key Essentials for Business Success, Leadership, Strategy, Finance, Operations, Marketing and Sales (can be purchased at www.BusinessSimplyPut.com).
In chapter 8 of Jim Collin's Good to Great he addresses the "human aspect" with the concept of the Flywheel and the DoomLoop.
- Steps Forward Consistent with the Hedgehog Concept-G-t-G companies are about a cumulative process –step by step, decision by decision, turn by turn of the flywheel = sustained and spectacular results
- Like pushing a giant heavy flywheel it takes effort, persistence, discipline, focus. Ultimately the flywheel gains momentum.
- Accumulation of Visible Results-The end result is dramatic but the transformation does not happen in one fell swoop, no defining moment, no single program, no brilliant insight by a charismatic leader, not a miracle, not from luck
- People Line Up, energized by Results-The movement does not require motivational speeches, to keep moving the commitment takes care of itself Alignment of culture follows from results not the other way around
- The flywheel Builds Momentum-Consistency and coherence within the system reinforces itself 1+1= 4
- For Good-to-Great organizations acquisitions come after breakthrough and are within the three circles
- Conversely, comparison companies develop a doomloop. Inconsistent management direction, changing focus stopping and starting with the latest management or technology fad had the reverse effect.
